Instructions

l Send home permission forms for a field trip through the local
community. Explain that the children will get off the bus to take
pictures.
l Consult the local phone book to help locate signs that contain all the
letters of the alphabet.
What To Do
1. Talk with the children about the alphabet and how it is comprised of
26 different letters. Recite the alphabet with the children.
2. Tell the children they will be going on an alphabet trip.
3. Go on a walk or bus ride through the local area, pointing out the
various letters on signs, from A to Z, and taking pictures of them. Note
the context in which the letter is located. Is it a store sign? A billboard?
A landmark? Have different children stand in each picture.
4. After getting pictures of all the letters, return to the classroom and print
the pictures in a size no smaller than 4" x 6". Paste the pictures on
construction paper, writing the letter the children found on each page.
5. Make a book from the pictures, modeled after City Seen from A to Z by
Rachel Isadora.
6. Add the book to the classroom library, inviting the children to look
through it and describe the letters and the experience of finding them.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children recite the letters of the alphabet?
l Were the children able to see the letters on the signs in the
community?
