Materials

  • Paper
  • Crayons or colored chalk

What to do

1. Explain to the children that they will be going on an outside art walk.

2. Demonstrate how to make rubbings, by placing paper over an object, such as a leaf, and gently rubbing back and forth with crayon or chalk to make an image.

3. As your class interacts with the environment, make rubbings of tree bark, the sidewalk, a fallen leaf, twigs, the grass, tires, etc.

More to do

  • Art: Make a classroom book or bulletin board display of your art walk rubbings.
  • Science: Collect various nature artifacts such as fallen tree bark, dead leaves and dried bugs and observe with magnifying glasses.
