1. Ahead of time, collect materials from nature or take the children on a nature walk and let them
collect the items.
2. Using a sharp, serrated knife, cut the bottom out of each Styrofoam cup, leaving the top part
about 2" (5 cm) deep (adult only).
3. Help the children write their names on wax-paper sheets and lay them on top of cardboard or
meat trays so that they lay flat without bulging.
4. Set the cup rings on top of the wax paper and secure them with masking tape.
5. Invite the children to sprinkle spices in the bottom of their cup ring.
6. Follow the instructions for mixing a small quantity of plaster of Paris (approximately 1/2 cup at a
time) to a semi-soupy consistency.
7. Help the children pour plaster into the cup ring and, working quickly, have them place the
nature materials on top of the wet plaster with a sprinkle of spice. Pat them into place.
8. Set the creations aside to dry overnight.
9. Remove from wax paper and remove cup ring from the sides. The children will enjoy taking
home their nature keepsakes.
