Instructions

* Place the items from the materials list on the children's work tables.
What to Do
1. Sit in a circle and ask the children what they know or feel about spiders. Ask
them to complete the sentence: "When I see a spider I ___________."
2. Explain that insects have six legs and spiders have eight. Spiders are not
insects; they are arachnids. We should never touch spiders. We don't want to
hurt them and some might bite. Talk about the importance of spiders to the
environment.
3. Read one of the books and then talk with the children about what they
learned.
4. At the tables, have the children draw pictures about spiders.
Poem
Little Spider by Shirley Anne Ramaley
I see a little spider
Spin a web next to a tree.
It works so hard all day long,
But I don't think it sees me.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Ask the children if they think spiders are important.
* Can they tell you if spiders are insects? Should they ever touch or disturb
spiders?
