What to do
1. Read the following poem out loud. Ask the children to repeat the refrain after every stanza.
Monster, Monster by Barbara Saul
Refrain:
Monster, Monster, I see you there
With purple eyes and long, green hair.
Late at night when I'm in bed,
A monster pops out his big head.
He's big and tall and very hairy,
You might even think he's scary.
He runs and jumps
And makes loud THUMPS.
When Monster stands up on my rug,
He gives me a great, big hug.
2. Pre-print the following phrases at the bottom of each piece of paper. Give one to each child. Ask them to draw a monster.
Monster feels sad when...
Monster feels happy when...
3. Work with the children individually and have them fill in the phrases orally while you write down what they say. Children can write their own answers, if they are able.
