Instructions
1. Using markers and cardstock, make picture cards of a few stories with plots
that have a definite sequence .
2. Read the stories with the class several times, encouraging them to help you
read each one as they become more familiar with the sequence of the
events. "Run, run as fast as you can..." Place the books in the Book Nook
where children can continue to enjoy them.
3. When they are thoroughly familiar with the stories, introduce four to seven
picture cards (per story) depicting the actions of the story.
4. Make a numbered story map for each title on a large piece of cardstock. This
is simply a piece of paper with the title of the book at the top and four to
seven numbered columns.
5. Ask the children to place the picture cards on the story map in the order that
events in the story happened.
6. To make this a self-correcting activity, number the cards on the back.
7. A variation of this activity is to choose one child to be "it." This child covers
his eyes while another child removes one of the cards and pushes the cards
together so there is no blank space. "It" must try to figure out which part of
the story was removed.
8. Encourage the children to retell the story while following the picture
prompts on the sequence cards.
