Instructions

1. Select a child to be the math person. The children love to do this job, so make sure each child gets a turn at some point.

2. Ask the child if he wants to do patterns, addition, or subtraction. Depending on the theme, consider providing sequencing pictures.

3. If the child picks patterns, start a pattern and have the child finish it, or invite the child to start his own pattern.

4. If he picks addition or subtraction, place felt numerals on the flannel board in an equation (for example, 4 + 1 = __). Explain what an equation is, and introduce the names of the math signs. Encourage the child to put dots onthe flannel board to represent each number on the board (four dots + one dot). This helps them to visualize the numbers.

5. Invite the child to answer the question by finding the correct felt numeral to place on the board.
