Materials

2 large fresh marshmallows for each child (mini-marshmallows could pose a choking hazard)Chart paper and marker

Instructions

1. Distribute one marshmallow to each child or one toeach group of two children. Ask the children not toidentify the object (the marshmallow) in front of them by name.

2. Ask the children to look at the object, but not touch it and brainstorm descriptive words.Accept all answers, for example, snowball, pillow, etc. Write responses on chart paper.

3. Ask the children to touch the object. How does it feel? Record all answers.

4. Let's smell it. What does this object smell like? Record the responses.

5. Can you hear it? Can it make any sound? Allow the children to drop their marshmallowsonto a clean table if they wish. Continue to write down children's responses.

6. Give each child another marshmallow. Ask them to identify it by name. Those who wish maytaste the marshmallow. Tell us how it tastes.

7. Discuss the children's responses and relate them to our five senses.More to doArt: Children may enjoy using their imaginations to dream up things they could do with marshmallows,then draw pictures of their ideas.Language: Depending on the children's ages, you may want to encourage them to dictate or writea paragraph describing their marshmallow experience, highlighting their sensory discoveries.
