Materials

ready-made graham cracker pie crust

2 3.4-ounce boxes of any flavor instant puddng and pie filling mix

2 cups of milk

measuring cup for the milk

wire whisk

mixing bowl

paper plates

spoons

knife (adult only)

refrigerator for chilling the pie

Instructions

1. Show the children the piecrust and ask them to identify its shape.
2. Pour two cups of cold milk into mixing bowl. Add two boxes of instant
pudding mix.
3. Let the children take turns using wire whisk to beat the mixture until it is
thickened and well blended. This would take about two minutes of continued
whisking, or longer with the children taking turns.
4. Help the children pour the mixture into a piecrust.
5. Put the piecrust into refrigerator and leave it there to chill for three hours.
6. At snack time, bring out the pie. When cut, a 9" crust will serve 16 slim slices.
Ask the children what shape the pieces of the pie resemble.
Poem
Shape Search by Jan Black
I'm looking for shapes.
Look what I found!
A pie is a circle!
A circle is round!
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the child identify that a pie is circular?
l Can the child identify that the pie slices are triangular?
l Can the child identify the shapes of other cooking-related items?
