Materials

Per child: Fine point markers or colored pencils

One construction paper strip, 1" x 2" (2.5 cm x 5 cm) One paper clip

One 6" (15 cm) plate One refrigerator magnet

Instructions

1. Let each child draw a figure on the paper strip.

2. At the bottom of the strip fold a tab that is as wide as the paper clip.

3. Attach a paper clip to the tab.

4. Place the figure on top of the plate and hold a magnet underneath the plate so it catches the clip and makes the figure stand upright.

5. Slide the magnet against the bottom of the plate to make the figure on top skate and dance.More to doMore science: Present a box filled with paper clips, marbles, crayons, buttons, etc. Ask the children to pick out the clips. Is there a fast way? * Drop a metal object into a fish tank or behind some furniture. How can we retrieve it? * Use a magnet to sort objects into a pile of metal and a pile of nonmetal.
