Instructions
1. Ask the children to sit together in a circle.
2. Tell them, "Today we are going to make a people pattern. I will tell you
where to stand to make the pattern."
3. Start by making a pattern, such as the first child stands, second child sits, third
child stands, and so on.
4. As you direct the children to stand or sit, vocalize what you are doing. For
example, "Robbie stands, Cherie sits, Jennifer stands," and so on.
5. After all of the children are in the pattern, walk behind each child and place
your hand on their heads while saying, "Stand, sit, stand, sit," and so on.
6. Ask the children what the pattern is. Encourage them to say the pattern as
you touch each child's head.
7. Repeat this process every day for a length of time, using a variety of patterns
such as: front, back, front, back; hands up, hands down; or lay down, sit.
More to do
More Math: Prepare patterns on pieces of card stock using dots, shaped blocks,
or other small items. Encourage the children to continue the pattern.
