Instructions

1. Discuss the food pyramid with the children and, if desired, show them apicture of it.2. Ask the children what foods they like to eat. Write their responses on a pieceof easel paper or a white board. Draw a picture of the foods, if desired.3. When finished, reread the list back to the children. Then explain to them thatthey will be making food collages of their favorite foods.4. Give the children magazines or old cookbooks and encourage them to cutout pictures of different foods.5. Give each child a paper plate. Encourage the children to glue their picturesonto their paper plates to make a collage.6. Allow time for each child to share their pictures with the rest of the children.More to doDramatic Play: Put empty food boxes in the Dramatic Play Center so thechildren can play "grocery store."Literacy: Ask the children to "write" about their collages. They can also dictatestories about their favorite foods and an adult can write them down.Science: Read The Carrot Seed by Ruth Krauss to the children. Give each child areal carrot seed to plant in either a clear plastic cup or in an outdoor garden.More Science: Fill a clear jar half full with buttermilk. Encourage the children totake turns shaking the jar until butter is formed.
