The following are some tips for constructive communication with the children: 1. Listen attentively. The first consideration in being an effective communicator is being a good listener. Eliminate distractions; make eye contact; and pay attention to what the child is saying. If you are unable to listen attentively, let the child know that this is not the best time to talk. 2. Talk with (not at) children. Talking "at" someone is a one-sided conversation. Talk to children as you would a friend in order to create an atmosphere that fosters discussion and encourages confidences. 3. Use conversation starters. Phrases such as "Tell me about that." And "Really?" invite children to say more about a particular topic while expressing the idea that their thoughts are worthy and appreciated. 4. Use more "Do's" than "Don'ts." State directions positively, telling children what you want them to do rather than what not to do. 5. Make requests simple. Avoid giving several directions at one time to increase children's chances of understanding. 6. Make important requests firmly. Get the child's attention before speaking, and speak as if you mean it. Be sure to state the reason why the child must do this particular thing. 7. Use considerate language. Communicate acceptance by using kind, encouraging words and avoiding sarcasm. Common courtesies such as "please" or "thank you" show respect while modeling appropriate manners.
