Materials

Epsom salt Water

Jar Paint cups

Paintbrushes Dark construction paper

Instructions

1. Mix a solution of equal amounts of water and Epsom salt in a jar and wait for the salt to dissolve.Pour into paint cups and add brushes.

2. Have the children paint a wet design on the dark paper with the Epsom salt solution. As thepaper dries, the design whitens and begins to crystallize.More to doArt: Children can use wax crayons to draw a picture or design on the dark paper (emphasizepressing heavily). Paint with the Epsom salt solution over the crayon design. As it dries, the crystalswill form on the paper wherever there is no crayon. This looks good with snowmen, snowforts and igloo drawings. * Children could glue a winter picture cut from a magazine on to constructionpaper, then paint over it with Epsom salt solution. When dry, staple a paper cut into theshape of a window pane over the painting to give it the Jack Frost effect you see on a frosty windowin winter.
