Instructions

1. Gather the children together and ask them if they have heard the term
"architect" before. Ask the children to explain what an architect does, or
explain the term to them.
2. Show the children the sample
blueprints and explain that
architects make designs for
buildings and then oversee the
construction.
3. Put the blueprints in the block
center, along with markers,
crayons, rulers, and blank paper. Invite
the children to practice making sample
blueprints, and then to try and build the
structures they made blueprints for by using
the blocks available in the center.

- Consider inviting an architect to the classroom to talk to the children, and
have the architect bring some pictures of the buildings that she helped build.

To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
- Do the children understand what an architect does?
- Are the children able to make simple blueprint designs in the Construction Zone?
- How well are the children able to use the blocks to construct the designs they
made blueprints for?
