Instructions

1. Make a set of cards depicting gross motor action on them (such as hopping,
running in place, jumping rope, walking a line, and so on). Find pictures in
magazines or draw your own.
2. Place the cards face down in the middle of your circle area.
3. Call one child up at a time to pick a card. The child then guesses how long or
how many times she can do the gross motor activity depicted on the card.
4. Write the child's name, the activity, and the child's goal on a piece of paper.
The rest of the children count as the child attempts her goal. Write the actual
number next to the child's guess.
5. This is a great way to transition to free play. Each child gets a turn before
going to free play. To speed things up, several children can go at once and
you can write a number for the group.
6. Discuss the results on the chart at a later circle. Who had the most hops?
How many children picked the "running in place" card? Who walked the
longest line?
7. This activity can be repeated several times to see if children can improve
their numbers.
