Materials

marker6 colorful tagboard shapes: circle, triangle, square, rectangle, oval, diamondmusic

Instructions

1. Use a marker to draw a smiley face on both sides of the tagboard circle.

2. Have the children sit in a circle.

3. Hand the six shapes to six children, evenly spaced around the circle.

4. Explain that when the music starts, they pass the shapes around the circle.

5. When the music stops, the children holding a shape stand up and carry their shape to something in the room that matches that shape.

6. Draw the children's attention to the smiley face circle. Explain that whoever ends up with the circle has to travel around the circle and give a high five to all class members before sitting down.

7. Begin the music and invite the children to pass the shapes in a clockwise direction around the circle.

8. Stop the music and wait until each child is standing near her matching shape. Each child holds her shape next to the matching item and explains what shape the object is. For example, "The clock is a circle, like this circle. My earrings are triangles, like this triangle."9. Always invite the child holding the circle to go last, because she has the special job of giving high fives to the group.

10. After the children return to their place on the floor, begin the music again and continue the game until everyone has had several chances to identify shapes in the classroom.Note: For younger children, omit the oval and diamond and play the game with the four main shapes.
