Instructions
Make a chart by drawing two columns on the card stock or chart paper. In
one column, write "doctor" and put a picture of a doctor. In the other
column, write "veterinarian" and put a picture of a veterinarian.
1. Gather the children together and ask them if they have ever been to the
doctor. Encourage the children to describe their experiences at the doctor's
office.
2. Ask the children if they are familiar with the word "veterinarian." Point out
that veterinarians are doctors for animals.
3. Ask the children whether they would rather be a doctor or veterinarian when
they grow up. Show the children the chart, and have the children take turns
putting a sticker or self-adhesive note on one side or the other, indicating what
they would rather be when they grow up.
4. Review the children's responses as a group, counting the total number in each
column. Talk with the children about why they chose one profession over the
other.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
1. Can the children describe what a doctor and a veterinarian do?
2. Can the children indicate which profession they would rather pursue when
they grow up?
3. Are the children able to determine which profession is more popular in the
class?
