Instructions

* On a poster, write the words of the song below with each action verb in
green, each animal in blue, and each vowel in red.
* Label cups "name" and "action."
* Mark off a movement area with cones or tape. (Tell each child that she is in a
bubble and if she gets too close to another child her bubble will burst.)
What to Do
1. If appropriate, do this activity with one or two children at a time.
2. The green words on the poster are action verbs because you can do them
around the room. Individual children can demonstrate the actions.
3. Discuss each animal. Say the animal word and the vowel sound it begins with.
4. Teach the children the "Old MacDonald's Animal Action Vowels" song.
Little Farmer's Animal Action Vowels by Kathy Stemke
(Tune: "Old MacDonald Had a Farm")
A little farmer had a vowel, A-E-I-O-U.
And on his farm the antelope dance,
A-E-I-O-U
With an a, a, here, and an a, a, there,
Here an a, there an a, everywhere an a, a,
The little farmer had a vowel, A-E-I-O-U.
3. Make cards with one animal word or action word on it.
4. Challenge the children to place the cards in the correct noun (name) cup or
action-verb (action) cup.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children identify the animals by name?
* Can the children differentiate between a name and an action?
