125 Brain Games for Toddlers and Twos, Revised

Creativity and imagination are higher-level skills, so it is critical that parents provide plenty of opportunities for young children to develop them! This cute, creative game from 125 Brain Games for Toddlers and Twos by Jackie Silberg is sure to help your toddlers and two-year-olds take a "step" in the right direction.

  • Show your two-year-old how to take GIANT steps.
  • Now show him how to take little, tiny fairy steps.
  • Make up a story using these two characters, and each time you mention one of them, you and your child take either a giant step or a fairy step.
  • Here is an idea to begin a story: Once upon a time there was a big giant who lived on a hill. He had many playmates, but his favorite was the teeny, tiny fairy...
  • Make up the rest of the story!

Instructions

What To Do
1. Gather the children together and talk with them about
firefighters. Ask the children if they have ever seen or
heard a fire truck in the street. Ask the children what
they think firefighters do.
2. Explain how firefighters help to keep the community
safe, and that the children should not be afraid of
firefighters, even when they are wearing their helmets
and other protective equipment.
3. Teach the children the following song.
Firefighters Are People by Kristen Peters
(Tune: "Did You Ever See a Lassie?")
Have you ever seen firefighters,
Firefighters, firefighters?
Have you ever seen firefighters,
Out of uniform?
They are fathers.
They are mothers.
They are brothers.
They are sisters.
Did you ever see a firefighter,
Out of uniform?
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children describe how firefighters help the community?
l Can the children sing the song above?
l Do the children know not to be afraid of firefighters?
