Materials

large shapes (circles, squares, rectangles, ovals, and triangles)

Instructions

1. Introduce the children to the names of the different shapes.

2. Invite the children to recite the following original poem. Be sure to point out that squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares. This is a tricky concept, especially for younger children.I like to look for circles,It's so much fun to do.They're round, and have no corners. Can you find circles, too?An oval looks just like an egg.Its shape is almost round. And if you're looking carefully,Lots of ovals can be found. The triangle is a special shape.Look and you will seeThat its sides and cornersAlways equal three. There's another shape to look for.Square is its special name.It has four corners and four sidesThat measure just the same. The world is full of rectangles. You see them everywhere. They have four sides and corners,And some of them are squares.

3. Encourage the children to look around the room and locate different examples of the shapes. Invite them to use the large cutouts of the shapes to remind them what each shape looks like.
