What to do
1. This is a good activity to do at the beginning of the year because it provides an opportunity to talk about diversity and sharing.
2. Ask each child to bring in her favorite fruit (already washed).
3. Help the children peel fruit if needed. Cut the fruit into strips and remove the core and seeds, if necessary.
4. Let the children use plastic knives to cut fruit into bite-sized pieces.
5. Place the fruit pieces into a bowl and mix.
6. Eat for snack.
7. Talk about the diversity of flavors and colors. Compare to people. Emphasize that everyone has different likes and dislikes. Talk about how we can all share our favorite things.
More to do
- Make large circles on the floor using yarn or tape. Encourage the children to move in and out of groups as you list favorite foods, colors, and so on. This demonstrates that we are the same in some ways and different in others.
- Math: Make a graph showing the sizes of the children's families, colors of their houses, types of pets, and so on.
