Instructions
1. Cover tables with newspaper and tape it down. Also, cover a portion of the
floor with newspaper.
2. Fill small paper cups half full with tempera paint. Put a paintbrush in each
cup.
3. Place the cups of paint in the center of each table. Put at least one cup of
each color on every table. Scatter the scraping objects (see list) around the
tables.
4. Help the children put on their paint shirts.
5. Ask them to paint over an entire sheet of paper in any design. (Remind them
to put the brush back in its designated color.)
6. Before their paintings dry, demonstrate how to use the scraping objects to
embellish their paintings with texture. Show them how to scrape the paint
while it is still wet to create stripes, textures, and swirls.
7. Encourage the children to experiment using this technique. For example, driving
small vehicles over wet paint makes tire prints, and pressing small animals
into it leaves tracks. They may want to bring objects from home or try objects
using in the classroom.
