Instructions

1. Make a tape of night sounds and find a picture of each animal making
the sound (frog, cricket, owl, wolf, raccoon, and so on). Put one picture on
each index card and laminate. Place the cards in a backpack along with
an answer key (pictures in the order they are heard on the tape).
2. Play the tape of night sounds. Challenge the children to try to find the
picture of what is making the sound. Ask them to place the cards in the
order they hear the sounds. They can use the answer key to check their
answers. This can be an individual activity if you give children
headphones to wear while listening to the tape.
3. Fill a backpack or pillowcase with nature items typically seen on a
camping trip. Ask the children to reach in and try to identify an item by
feeling it.
4. Gather items with different "camping smells" and place on cotton balls
(liquid items) or inside film canisters (solid items). Challenge the children
to identify the different smells.
5. Draw a picture of each item on a piece of chart paper. When a child
smells an item, he places the film canister or cotton ball on the picture.
6. Put nature items in a big basket and encourage the children to sort them
into zipper-closure bags. Challenge them to guess how many items are
in the bags when they are finished. They may then count the items in the
bags, and order the bags from fewest items to most.
