Food Pyramids With Blocks

Materials:

wooden blocks
toy food or magazine pictures of food from all six food groups
picture or poster of the food pyramid

Instructions:

1. Using a picture of the food pyramid as a guide, ask the children to help you
build a large food pyramid on the floor out of blocks. Lay the blocks
flat against the floor (for a picture of the food pyramid, go to
http://www.pueblo.gsa.gov/cic_text/food/foodpyramid/
main.htm).
2. Gather toy food or pictures of
food from all six food groups
and place them next to the
food pyramid.
3. Encourage the children to look
at the food and decide where
each food should be placed on the
food pyramid. Talk about the
different food groups and good
nutrition.
4. Continue the discussion by asking the
children what they like to buy at the
grocery store and have them guess
which food group the item belongs in.
More to do Math: Encourage children to count the
number of food items in each section
of the food pyramid. Subtract or add
food and count again.
Field Trip: Visit your local
grocery store.
