Instructions

1. Make New Year's fortune cookies using sugar cookie dough. Beforehand,
write "fortunes" on slips of paper. For example, "This year you will make a new
friend." Cut the dough into small balls. Demonstrate how to flatten the balls
on the baking sheet, stick the "fortunes" in the center, and fold the dough
over. Bake according to package directions. Encourage the children to
remove the fortunes before eating the cookies.
2. Make New Year's T-shirts with the children. Give each child a white T-shirt
(purchased or donated by parents). Put newspaper or flat cardboard inside
each shirt before writing on them. Help the children use stencils and fabric
pens to write "I love _______ (insert the numerals of the new year)."
Encourage them to decorate their T-shirts with fabric paint pens and
markers.
3. Make New Year's hats with streamers and stickers. Help each child roll a piece
of black of construction paper into a cone shape. Show them how to attach a
black and white streamer at the tip of the hat. Let the children use number
stickers to put the date of the new year on the front of the hat.
4. Have a New Year's party! Encourage the children to use number cookie
cutters to cut out the date of the new year on leftover store-bought sugar
cookie dough left from the fortune cookies. Let the children wear their Tshirts
and hats, serve number cookies and fortune cookies, and celebrate!
