1. Take a walk outdoors to pick wildflowers, or use a variety of artificial 
flowers. 
2. If desired, show the children a flower guide and explain how the flowers 
are sorted. 
3. Have the children sort the flowers by color, leaf shape, and size. Discuss 
similarities and differences between the flowers. 
4. Count the petals on each of the flower types and sort them. Tell the 
children that scientists use the color, leaf shape, and number of petals to 
identify different flowers. 
5. Let the children use colored pencils to draw the flowers.
