Materials

fresh-picked flowers and ferns or other greenery

scissors

unbreakable vases or tall unbreakable glasses

name cards or labels

posters or photos of floral arrangements

Instructions

1. Ask the children to wash the rocks in a dishpan of water.
2. Let the rocks dry and place them in a clean coffee can. Put the plastic lid on
the coffee can.
3. Bring the coffee can outdoors and ask the children to kick it around.
4. After the children kick and move the can for a while, bring it back inside and
place it on a large sheet of white paper. Ask the children to sit around the
paper.
5. Remove the large rocks first. Then, carefully empty the contents of the can
onto the paper.
6. The contents of the can will now consist of small grains of sand. Ask the
children where the sand came from. The children will discover that they made
sand!
7. Give the children magnifying glasses to observe the grains.
