Instructions

1. Cut squares of plastic wrap or cellophane large enough to fit over the heads of the flashlights and secure with rubber bands.

2. The children turn on the flashlights and shine the colored light beams around the room.

3. Other activities children can try include matching a blue beam to a blue object; trying to mix colors by shining two different colored beams on one spot; shining the light beam on a mirror and trying to make the reflection hit a predetermined target in the room; and experimenting with the overhead lights on and off. Is one condition better than another?More to doArt: The children can mix tempera colors, finger paint colors or food coloring to further experiment with color mixing.More science: The children can make a pair of binoculars from empty toilet paper tubes and colored cellophane. They will see the world through different colors. * Help children use the overhead projector to discover concepts of light and reflection. By moving the lens cover around, children will discover more about reflecting light. * What other things will make a reflecting light? (Shiny spoon, a stainless steel tea kettle, even one child's book bag, as we discovered.)
