What to Do
1. Read The Butterfly Counting Book by
Jerry Pallotta to the children.
2. Have the children help you count the
butterflies on each page.
3. Look at the different butterflies and see
if you can find them in other pictures or
books.
4. After reading the book, talk with the
children about butterflies. Specifically,
discuss how caterpillars turn into butterflies.
5. Set out several butterfly outlines, paper, and crayons.
6. Invite the children to make butterfly counting pages of their own by sketching
the outlines of different butterfly cutouts.
7. Challenge the children to count the number of butterfly outlines they make on
their papers.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* How well do the children count the butterflies in the book?
* Can the children trace the outlines of the butterfly cutouts?
* How well do the children count their own butterflies?
