Materials

  • White felt, 1 yard (1 m)
  • Scissors
  • Feathers
  • Glue
  • "Five Little Ducks" story

Instructions

  1. Fold the piece of felt lengthwise to allow a double fold of fabric about 12" (30cm) wide.
  2. On the folded edge of the felt, trace a large "U" shape. Make it large enough so that when it is cut out, it will create a hole that will fit over a child's head.
  3. Trace a second "U" shape about 6" (15 cm) below the first "U" to create the bottom edge of the collar.
  4. Glue several feathers to the front of each of the six collars to create story characters for retelling "Five Little Ducks."
  5. Six children wear the storytelling collars and role play the song as the other children sing the song.
  6. Create other storytelling collars for retelling books and fingerplays. Use any felt or fabric pieces to create the characters. Decorate as needed.

Instructions

1. Wrap a book that you are going to introduce to the children in bright wrapping
paper. Decorate it with bows or ribbons.
2. Place this "gift" in the Circle Time area to build the children's excitement.
3. Ask a child to unwrap the gift. Then, share the book with the children at
Circle Time and add it to the Book Center.
4. Give your class the "gift of reading" regularly!
