Instructions

1. From the cardboard, cut out four circles, four squares, four triangles, and four rectangles. The shapes should be about 8" to 10" across.

2. On the pavement/blacktop outdoors, trace around the shapes with chalk. Draw three of each shape. Place them in random order.

3. Distribute the cardboard shapes to the children and ask them to find the matching shape on the blacktop.

4. When the children begin, let them take their time. After a while, start to time how long it takes for them to finish. Also, consider letting one child at a time match all of the shapes by himself.More to do Add variety to this activity by cutting the shapes into three different sizes (small, medium, and large). Count the shapes at the end of the activity and ask the children questions, such as "How many are small? How many are medium? How many are large? How many are there all together?" Depending on the age of the children, add more complicated shapes (octagon, diamond, and parallelogram).
