Instructions

1. Talk about germs and explain that they are invisible. Discuss the importance
of washing hands before eating and after toileting.
2. Put a couple drops of oil onto each child's hand and sprinkle cinnamon on
top of the oil. Ask the children to rub their hands together. Explain that these
are pretend "germs" that they can see.
3. Ask the children to wash their hands. If they wash their hands using only cold
water and no soap, the cinnamon and oil will remain on their hands.
However, if they add soap and wash their hands really well, the cinnamon
and oil will disappear.
4. Have a hand inspection and explain what is necessary to get hands clean.
