Instructions

1. Discuss with the children how quickly grass grows in the spring and why
people cut their grass. Ask the children if they have family members who
regularly cut grass in the spring and summer. Ask the children if they have ever
played in very tall grass.
2. Teach the children the following song with all the motions and voice changes:
The Lawnmower Song by Kay Flowers
(Tune: "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush")
I'm a little blade of grass, blade of grass, blade of grass. (squat and sing in high
voice)
I'm a little blade of grass and in the lawn I'm growing. (begin to stand up)
I'm a taller blade of grass, blade of grass, blade of grass. (stand and sing
normally)
I'm a taller blade of grass and in the lawn I'm growing. (raise hands above
head)
I'm a great big blade of grass, blade of grass, blade of grass. (stretch arms high
overhead and sing in deep voice)
I'm a great big blade of grass. Oh, no! Here comes the lawnmower! (make loud
mower sound and squat back down)
I'm a little blade of grass, blade of grass, blade of grass. (squat and sing in high
voice)
I'm a little blade of grass and in the lawn I'm growing.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children move their bodies from a squat to a full stretch and back to
a squat?
l Can the children change their voices to sing high, normally, and in a deep
tone?
