Materials

blackboard and chalk, dry-erase board and dryerase marker, or chart paper and marker

iced mini-muffins (five per child)

small paper cups

raisins

Instructions

1. Write the numbers 1 to 5 on a blackboard, dry-erase board, or chart paper. Point
to each one as you say the number aloud.
2. Explain that the number one is the smallest number and number five is the
largest number.
3. Give each child five mini-muffins. Give them a cup with 15 raisins. Ask the
children to number the muffins from 1 to 5
by placing one raisin on the first
muffin, two raisins on the next
muffin, and so on.
4. Have the children arrange
the muffins from smallest
to largest based on the
number of raisins, and
then eat their math
experience for snack!
Safety Note: Before serving
any food, especially peanut
butter, check for allergies.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children count from 1 to 5 (or 1 to 10)?
* When you say a number, can the child hold up that many muffins?
