Instructions

* Cut a variety of shapes in a variety of sizes from the colored construction
paper.
What to Do
1. Talk to the children about the different shapes they will
be using to make their animals. Discuss what animal
features might be represented by the shapes. For
instance, a triangle could be a beak, ears, or a tail.
2. If desired, guide the children through the creation of an
animal to help them visualize how animals are created
from basic shapes.
3. Hand out the background paper. Have the construction paper shapes
available to the children.
4. Let the children pick out the shapes they want to use.
5. Have the children glue the shapes onto the background paper to create their
animals.
6. If desired, let the children draw additional features and/or backgrounds for
their animals. Also, encourage the children to dictate to you a sentence about
their animals.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* To increase the math content in this activity, provide
a space for the children to indicate how many of
each shape they used to create their animal.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Are the children able to use the shapes to create an animal?
* If provided, do the children accurately count the number of shapes used?
