Instructions

Use masking tape to mark off four "pieces of property," each about 2' x 3'.
l Sprinkle the leaves randomly around two adjoining "properties."
l Sprinkle the snow randomly around two adjoining "properties."
What To Do
1. Invite the children to name some of the people in their neighborhoods.
2. Ask the children to think of ways they can show kindness to their neighbors.
3. Explain that one way to show kindness to neighbors is to visit with them when
they are outside working. Children can ask questions such as, "How are you?,"
"How is your job going?," "What has your family been doing lately?," "Do you
need any help?," and "Do you have any plans for a vacation?"
4. Select three children from the class and have them demonstrate how to use
the shovels to shovel the "snow" and the rakes to "rake the leaves" into piles
on imaginary properties.
5. Invite the children to use the yard tools as they pretend to be raking and
shoveling, and to talk with one another as though they were friendly
neighbors.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l What kinds of questions do the children ask one another when pretending to
be neighbors?
l Are the children able to rake and shovel the "leaves" and "snow"?
l Can the children describe ways to be kind to their neighbors?
