Instructions

1. Read several books featuring the same character to the children.
2. Show the children a copy of your weekly shopping list. Read a few of the
items on the list, including both food and non-food items. Explain why
people make shopping lists. Ask them if their families use a shopping list, and
ask them to name some items that might be on a shopping list.
3. Explain that they are going to use their imaginations to create a shopping list
for the book character.
4. On the top of a piece of large paper or poster board write, "Shopping List for
_________" and fill in the character's name.
5. As a group, brainstorm items that might be on that character's shopping list.
Write the items on the paper, leaving plenty of room between each item. For
example, items on a list for the caterpillar in The Very Hungry Caterpillar by
Eric Carle might be sunglasses, an apple, two pears, three plums, four strawberries,
five oranges, chocolate cake, an ice cream cone, a pickle, Swiss
cheese, salami, a lollipop, cherry pie, a sausage, a cupcake, watermelon,
green leaves, and some flowers.
6. Encourage the children to draw pictures next to the items listed on the chart.
Display the chart next to the character's books.
