Instructions

1. Collect photos from newspapers and magazines involving nighttime
activities and nocturnal environments. Be sure to have a variety of photos,
including city and country environments, animals, homes, people, and so on.
Glue each photo to a piece of oak tag.
2. Introduce and display the cards. Ask the children to categorize the photos as
desired and share with a friend or another adult.
3. Make a nighttime word list with the children. Ask each child to dictate
nighttime words as you write the words on 6" x 18" drawing paper with a
black marker. Have the children trace the words and decorate them with
neon or light crayons, covering the marker lines. Encourage them to decorate
the paper, too.
4. Let the children use diluted black tempera paint to paint over their paper,
left to right. The crayon will resist the paint. Hang the papers to dry.
5. If desired, children can make their own nighttime book using their dictated
words. Help them print their words on 4 1/2 " x 5 1/2 " sheets of paper using a
bright-colored crayon. The children paint over the words as before. Let the
paint dry and then staple the pages together to make a book.
