Materials
several aquariums with tight-fitting screen lids
bugs (caterpillars, crickets, meal worms, and so on)Instructions
1. Do some research about the bugs you intend to keep in the classroom.
2. Let children help decorate each aquarium to suit the bugs it will house.
For example, earthworms need loose soil, some organic material for food,
and an occasional light shower of "rain." They also need to be kept out of
sunlight. A few small plants and stones could be used for decoration.
3. Introduce the bugs to the children. Explain what each bug eats and if it
will turn into something else. For example, meal worms change into
beetles and caterpillars turn into butterflies.
4. Encourage the children to make observations about the bugs each day.
5. Keep the bugs for the whole month or until metamorphosis is complete.
6. Release the bugs in a suitable environment.
