Deck of playing cards

Instructions

1. Add a deck of playing cards to the manipulatives area of your classroom or provide them in a Math Station.

2. Encourage the children to sort the cards by color, suit, face value, and so on.

3. Challenge them to count the number of shapes depicted on each card, the number of red or black cards, or all the cards.

4. If desired, let the children make their own set of cards using shapes of their choice. Instead of hearts, spades, diamonds, and clubs, they may choose to make crescents, rectangles, triangles, hexagons, or other shapes.
