Instructions

1. Begin with the following fingerplay.
I have eyes so I can see (curl fingers of both hands around eyes like
binoculars)
The smallest leaf (point fingers close together)
On the tallest tree. (hands go high overhead)
My ears can hear the cars go by. (cup hands behind ears)
My lips can taste some apple pie. (lick your lips)
My nose can smell a rose so sweet, (touch your nose)
And tell me when it's time to eat. (rub your tummy)
My hands can pet a kitten's fur, (make stroking motion)
And touch its chest to feel it purr.
My five senses help me very well,
To see, hear, taste, touch and smell. (touch related body part with each word)
2. Now ask the children answer each of the following questions by pointing to a
body part (or parts) and naming the sense.
How can you tell...
There's a cake in the oven? (nose/smell)
The radio is on? (ears/hearing)
The lemonade is too sour? (mouth/taste)
Your friend is wearing a red shirt? (eye/sight)
An ice cube is cold? (fingers/touch)
It's dark outside? (eyes/sight)
The telephone is ringing? (ears/hearing)
The candy is sweet? (mouth/taste)
A bunny's tail is soft? (fingers/touch)
Your mom is wearing perfume? (nose/smell)
More to do
Set up five "Sensation Stations" around the room.
Sight: Make and decorate telescopes or binoculars from paper towel or toilet
paper tubes for outdoor visual discoveries.
Hearing: Put a tape recorder or tape player in the Dramatic Play area.
Taste: Serve pieces of fresh fruit (five or more different kinds) to eat with
toothpicks for snack. Compare and enjoy the distinct flavor of each fruit.
Smell: Put scented markers and paper on the art table.
Touch: Place a "feely box" (or bag) in the Science area. Put objects with different
textures inside the box for the children to feel and identify.
