Instructions

What To Do
1. Spend some time reading books
about people who work in a
neighborhood (see list to the left
for suggestions).
2. With the children, discuss the
different people necessary to make
each neighborhood or community
work.
3. Ask the children how they might go about imitating the work that these
various professionals do. Provide the children with some examples,
such as a baker rolling dough or baking bread in an imaginary oven.
4. Tell the children they will be taking turns acting out the duties of
various professionals while the rest of the children guess the profession.
5. Select a child, whisper a profession to that child, and have the child
imitate the work of that professional as the rest of the children say what
profession it is.
6. When the children guess the profession, ask them what the child was
doing that made them see what the profession was.
7. Repeat the process with another child.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children name several jobs of people in the neighborhood?
l Can the children describe the duties of the people in those jobs?
l Can the children explain why those jobs are necessary for the
community to function?
