Instructions

1. Draw large numerals in order from 1 to 10 (or 20) on the sidewalk or blacktop (one large 3' numeral per square or space).

2. Draw the numeral with a bold outline so that the inside may be colored or decorated.

3. Assign two or more children to each numbered space. Let them decorate the numeral using the colored chalk.

4. Invite the children to draw sets of objects within the sidewalk square.

5. Have the children line up at the beginning of the colorful "number line."6. Give specific directions for children to follow (hop, skip, jump, crab walk, and so on) as they travel along the number line and say each numeral aloud.

7. Children will enjoy moving along the number line as they admire each other's artwork.

8. Older children may draw their own number line using the colored chalk. Invite the children to draw a straight line and then print the numerals 1 to 10 (or higher) down the length of the line.
