Materials

Blue bulletin board paper Construction paper

Colored pencils, crayons, markers Glue

Cotton balls Tape

Instructions

1. Explain to the children that they will be creating amural. Put out a piece of blue bulletin board paper,large enough for all the children to work on at once.

2. Have the children draw a scene (of a town, neighborhood, woods, etc.) alongthe bottom third of the paper. Encourage the children to be creative.

3. When the children have finished the scene, discuss the three basic types of clouds:Stratus clouds are flat clouds that look like a blanket covering the sky. These clouds are closestto the earth. Cumulus clouds are puffy clouds that resemble a brain or head of broccoli.These clouds form higher in the sky, above the Stratus clouds. Cirrus clouds are wispy cloudsthat look like feathers or long blowing hair. These clouds form very high, above the Cumulusclouds, and are made up of ice crystals.

4. Have the children glue the cotton balls onto the paper in the shapes of the three differenttypes of clouds. Make sure that the children remember to make a flat layer close to the Earthto signify the Stratus clouds, and wispy clouds at the very top of the paper to signify theCirrus clouds.

5. Hang the mural where everyone can appreciate it.More to doLanguage: Encourage the children to make up a story about what is happening in the mural.
