Materials

Clothespins, one for each child

Paintbrushes

Craft paint

Glitter or sequins and glue

Magnet squares

Hot glue gun (adult only)

Instructions

1. Take a full-length photo of each child. Turn the camera sideways so the childfills the viewfinder. Make sure the child's head is at the very top of the photo(nothing showing above) and his feet are at the very bottom (nothing showingbelow).2. Get the photos developed in the largest size you can. If you use a digitalcamera, print the photos on a full sheet (8" x 10") if possible. If you can'tprint large photos, then get them developed in the regular size and enlargethem to 8" x 10" on a copier.3. Glue each photo on a 9" x 12" piece of oaktag, leaving a margin on the leftto bind the book later.4. Let dry.5. Bend each page at the left margin to create a crease.6. Stack the photos together, making sure they are all right side up.7. Use a paper cutter to cut the photos into three equal parts. Cut from the righthand side toward the left. DO NOT CUT ALL THE WAY THROUGH. Leavethe margin on the left uncut. The top cut should include the head andshoulders, the middle cut should include the trunk to the mid thighs, and thebottom cut should include the mid thigh to the feet.8. Create a cover for the book and use a blank page as the back cover.9. Bind the left-hand edge of the book using jump rings or yarn.10. Show the children how to mix and match the body sections to create "new"people from the photos. They will have fun creating a child with Susie's head,Tommy's body, and Doug's legs!More to doArt: Make several copies of each child's photo. Cut them into pieces by bodyparts (such as head, trunk, arms, and legs). Put them into the Art Station andencourage the children to glue them together to create a whole new person.Language: Ask the children to make up names and stories for the "new" peoplethey have created by flipping the pages of the book. Ask leading questions suchas: What does the person like to do? What does that person like to eat? Whowould be friends with that person?
