Materials

chalk (on concrete) or long rope (on grass)large numerals (1 to 12), preferably on stand-up boards like a photo frame

Instructions

1. Mark a large circle on the ground using chalk or rope. The size depends on how many children are playing the game, but it should be at least 30' in diameter. Clearly indicate which is the top and bottom of the clock.

2. Mark a long line beneath the clock, about 3' away from it.

3. Place the numerals around the circle, so they are clearly visible.

4. Children stand on the line beneath the clock face, facing 12 o'clock.

5. Stand in the center and call out a time, using your arms like clock hands. Hold out an outstretched arm for the minute hand and bend your elbow toward your body for the hour hand.

6. All the children have to run to the appropriate place on the clock face.

7. Have them return to the line underneath the clock face each time, so they are always looking at the clock the right way up.

8. Once the children are familiar with the position of the hours, you can progress to half and then quarter hours.
