Read The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle to the children. Look at the caterpillar illustrations and discuss how caterpillars are made up of many segments. 2. Hand out the circles and the background paper. 3. Have the children glue the circles together to make caterpillars with green bodies and red heads. Let the children decide if the caterpillar's circles run in a straight line or form a hump. 4. Have the children use markers or crayons to draw faces on their caterpillars. 5. Instruct the children to count the circles and then help the children write in the number of circles that make up their caterpillars.
