Materials

hammockobjects with different weights (feathers, leaves, books, paper, boxes, pillows)

Instructions

1. Tie the two ends of a hammock to two poles or two trees. (If a hammock is not available, use a canvas tarp or heavyweight plastic sheeting.)2. Ask the children which objects dropped onto the hammock would make it sag in the middle.

3. Let each child take a turn dropping an object on the hammock.

4. Discuss what happens to the hammock with each object.

5. Let the children take turns sitting on the hammock and see what happens when more children are added.
