Instructions

CAUTION: This activity involves hot wax and lit candles. Supervise CLOSELY at
all times.
1. Discuss solids and liquids and what happens when something changes
temperatures.
2. Give each child a small glass container and a candle. Ask the children to put
their candles inside their glass container.
3. An adult lights each candle. Instruct the children not to touch but to watch
what happens as the candle burns.
4. After each child has observed a solid heating up and turning to liquid (wax
melting), ask the children to blow out the candles.
5. At this point, an adult goes to each child and helps him pour his liquefied wax
onto wax paper.
6. Talk to the children about the liquid wax cooling and hardening once again.
