1. At the beginning of the school year, send a note home suggesting that instead of sending food to school to celebrate a child's birthday, the birthday child should choose a book to donate to the class library.
2. When a child brings a donated book to class, write the child's name and date of the donation inside the book.
3. On the child's birthday, read the book to the class.
